Letter to the Church of Sardis Revelation 3:1-6
Revelation 3:5-6 The person who overcomes in this way will wear white clothes, and I will never erase his name from the Book of Life. I will acknowledge His name in the presence of my Father and His angels. Let everyone listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.
My Lord has called upon me to be watchful against spiritual enemies and to be diligent in tasks. I strive, relying on the grace of the Holy Spirit, to revive and strengthen the faith and spiritual affections of those who are still alive to God, even though they may be in a declining state. Whenever I am off my watch, I lose ground, then my works are hollow and empty; prayers are not filled with holy desires, good deeds not filled up with true charity, days not filled up with suitable soul devotion to God. There are no inward affections suitable to outward acts and expressions;
When the spirit is wanting, the physical form cannot last for long. In searching for a revival within my soul or the souls of others, it is essential to compare what I believe with my actions. This reflection helps me to be humbled and encourages me to hold firmly to what remains.
If it should be despised, Jesus Christ enforces His counsel with a dreadful threat. Yet my blessed Lord does not leave this sinful one without some encouragement.
He makes honorable mention of the faithful remnant in Sardis; He makes a gracious promise to them. He that overcomes shall be clothed in white raiment; the purity of grace shall be rewarded with the perfect purity of glory. Jesus Christ has His book of life, a register of all who shall inherit eternal life; the book of remembrance of all who live to God, and keep up the life and power of godliness in evil times. Jesus, the Messiah, will bring forward this book of life and show the names of the faithful before God and all the angels on the great day.
I pray for a pure heart, to be clothed in white.
Consider the manner in which you 'go on.' What can keep your works from being hollow and empty, your prayers not filled with holy desires, your giving not really filled up with charity, or your soul not totally devoted to God?
I pray to be humbled and quickened to hold fast to that which remains and OVERCOME.
