Temperance - Moderation in Action

Temperance - Moderation in Action

Galatians 5:22-23  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance:  against such there is no law.

Romans 6:6 We know that our old natures were crucified with Him so that our sin-laden bodies might be rendered powerless and we might no longer be slaves to sin.

Galatians 5:1 Jesus has set us free so that we may enjoy the benefits of freedom. So keep on standing firm in it, and stop putting yourselves under the yoke of slavery again.

Proverbs 25:28 - Like a city with breached walls is a man without self-control.

  • Self-control is controlling emotions, desires, or expressions in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations.
  • Self-control refuses the indulgence of our foolish desires, and we find the liberty to live as we should.
  • Self-control is a gift of the Holy Spirit that frees us to enjoy good health, good stewardship, and a clear conscience.
  • Self-control leads to perseverance and holy living.

Solomon preaches to us here in the entire chapter of Proverbs 25 about the vanity of the world and that it cannot make us happy, of the depravity of sin, and its inevitable tendency to make us miserable. It shows that no created good can satisfy the soul and that happiness is to be found in God alone, and this principle must, under the Holy Spirit's teaching, lead the heart to Christ Jesus.

2 Peter 1:6 You must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge, your knowledge with self-control, your self-control with endurance, your endurance with godliness, your godliness with brotherly kindness and your brotherly kindness with love

Turn all of these promises into prayers for the transforming and purifying grace of the Holy Spirit. Yield to Him and let Him work.
