Goodness

Goodness

Psalm 23:6, Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

David refers to goodness and mercy following him throughout his life. He speaks of these two as if they were companions walking with him on his life's path. He dwells with this goodness and mercy "all the days of his life," the dark days as well as the bright.

If there is any good in us, it is because of the good pleasure of God's grace.

Goodness is the uprightness of the soul and an action that reaches out to others to do good even when it is not deserved. It is virtue and holiness in action with a desire to be a blessing.

Romans 12:9 gives us directives for this fruit of goodness:
Your love must be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to each other with mutual affection—Excel at showing respect for each other. Never be lazy in showing such devotion. Be on fire with the Spirit. Serve the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in trouble, and persistent in prayer. Supply the needs of the saints. Extend hospitality to strangers.

This is the definition of goodness. True Christian goodness will help us take part in the sorrows and joys of each other.
