Supreme Court Choice … Judge Sonia Sotomayor

May 26th, 2009 Administrator No comments

Time to begin researching and understanding the President’s Supreme Court nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

Worth Scrutinizing:

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” said Judge Sotomayor

Senator Gregg Statement on His Withdrawal for Consideration of U.S. Commerce Secretary

Sen. Gregg stated, “I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.

“However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.

“Obviously the President requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives.

“I greatly admire President Obama and know our country will benefit from his leadership, but at this time I must withdraw my name from consideration for this position.

“As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the President’s proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine.

“Kathy and I also want to specifically thank Governor Lynch and Bonnie Newman for their friendship and assistance during this period. In addition we wish to thank all the people, especially in New Hampshire, who have been so kind and generous in their supportive comments.

“As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate.”

Time to ask more questions:

  • The stimulus package is really that bad… isn’t it? or… isn’t it! (not really a question. It *is*
  • Why is the census so important? What could the democrats possibly want with power over the census? Google it…
  • Way to go Gregg! You’re on my great-politicians list :)

Another Bad Nomination! Porn Lawyer for Deputy Attorney General

February 5th, 2009 Administrator No comments

Vetting means to scrutinize a candidate’s background such as finances, personal conduct and past experience. President Obama’s Vetting system itself is coming under scrutiny as we wonder how he could nominate some of the candidates he’s nominated. The list is long and boring but here’s one that should be dealt with (see the list below if you’re really interested):

Committee on the Judiciary: to hold hearings to examine
the nomination of David W. Ogden, of Virginia, to be
    Deputy Attorney General, 9:30 a.m., SD–226.

Who is David W. Ogden? He’s a lawyer hired by Playboy and ACLU and has opposed filters on library computers protecting children from Internet porn and successfully defended the right of pornographers to produce material with underage children. He also sued the federal government in an attempt to publish Braille versions of Playboy magazine at taxpayer’s expense.

Ogden has fought for unlimited abortion license, gays in the military and has urged courts to redefine traditional marriage.

UPDATE: Ogden’s confirmation hearing was today, February 5, 2009. Senators will have a week to submit written questions.

  • Tom Daschle
  • Timothy Geithner
  • Nancy Killefer

    New Bills and Resolutions

February 5th, 2009 Administrator No comments

Lilly Ledbetter Act - a gender discrimination bill which allows pay discrimination lawsuits to proceed years or even decades after alleged discrimination took place. Under the act, employees could sue at any time after alleged discrimination took place.
Further Reading: The Ledbetter Act: Sacrificing Justice for “Fair” Pay

Statutes of limitations - a statute prescribing the time period during which legal action can be taken and perform several important functions:

  • Block suites where defensive evidence is likely to be stale or expired and cannot be defended.
  • Prevents bad actors from continuing to harm the plaintif and other potential victims
  • Prevents gaming of the system such as destroying defensive evidence or running up damages
  • Promotes the resolution of claims

  • State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) - a United States federal government program that gives funds to states in order to provide health insurance to families with children. The program was designed to cover uninsured children in families with incomes that are modest but too high to qualify for Medicaid.
Further Reading: The New SCHIP Bill: The Senate Must Protect Private Coverage
    Problems with this bill:

  • Will make comprehensive health care reform more difficult
  • Undercuts President Obama’s promise to end special interest earmarks
  • Will result in “crowd-out” or displacement of both private health insurance coverage and funding. (see chart below)
  • Will impose higher and unnecessary costs as the program enrolls children who would have otherwise had private coverage. (taxpayers spend $1 to get 50 cents worth of new coverage.)
  • Crowd-Out Caused by SCHIP Expansions (heritage.org)

A resolution calling for Charles B. Rangel of the House Ways and Means Committee chairman with tax problems, to step down until the House ethics committee completes its investigation into his financial dealings. Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) offered this pivileged resolution on Wednesday.

The House ethics committee is investigating Rangle’s personal financial dealings, including his control of rent-stabilized apartments in Harlem, his failure to pay thousands of dollars of taxes on a Dominican Republic resort home and, most seriously, his fund raising efforts on behalf of the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College of New York. A watchdog group says Rangel has failed to report hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of personal financial transactions on his annual disclosure forms.

While such a resolution will probably not pass, it will force Democrats to choose sides on the issue. Carter’s action has also brought more attention to the integrity of this institution during a time when tax problems seem to be hitting prominent

Geithner Confirmed Secretary of the Treasury

January 27th, 2009 Administrator No comments

By 60 yeas 34 nays (Vote No. EX. 15), Timothy
    F. Geithner, of New York, to be Secretary of the
Treasury. [Those who opposed the nomination said they could not accept Geithner's explanation that his failure to pay $34,023 in self-employment taxes from 2001 to 2004 when he worked at the International Monetary Fund was an unintentional error. We're all wondering how someone who can't even do his own taxes can run the Treasurey]
